NY notary renewal: how to renew your commission
Updated October 2026 · Based on the NY Department of State Notary Public License Law
A New York notary commission lasts 4 years. Renewing is quick and costs $60, as long as you do it in the right window. Miss it by more than six months and you are back to the written exam.
The renewal timeline
| Commission term | 4 years |
|---|---|
| Earliest renewal | 90 days before expiration |
| Exam waived if you renew | before expiration, or within 6 months after |
| Military service | within 1 year after discharge (other than dishonorable or bad conduct), if service prevented you from renewing |
| Fee | $60, nonrefundable |
The Department of State may mail you a reminder postcard, but it can be delayed. Tracking your expiration date is your job: it is printed on your ID card.
How to renew, step by step
- Complete a new Oath of Office (form DOS-2201) and sign it in ink before a person authorized to administer oaths. Scan it as a single-page PDF.
- Sign in to NY Business Express with your NY.gov account and open the "Notary Public Commission (DOS-0033)" service.
- Choose renewal, upload the oath, and pay $60 by credit or debit card.
- Track the status in your account. Online applicants receive a printable ID card by email.
Renewing on paper is still possible: mail the application to NYS Department of State, Division of Licensing Services, PO Box 22001, Albany, NY 12201-2001.
Changing your name at renewal
If you married during your term, you could keep notarizing under your commissioned name, adding your married name in parentheses. Renewal is the moment you can switch to your new name for the next 4-year term.
What can block a renewal
- Record keeping. Since January 2023, every notary must keep a record of each notarial act for 10 years. A notary who failed to comply with these regulations can be refused reappointment.
- Letting it lapse too long. More than 6 months after expiration, the exam waiver no longer applies.
- A change you never reported. Name, address and email changes must be reported within 5 days, with a $10 fee (free for a name change from marriage or divorce).
Missed the window? You will need the exam again
If your commission expired more than 6 months ago, plan to qualify again: pass the written exam ($15), then apply as a new notary ($60). The rules have changed since many commissions were first issued, especially on records and electronic notarization, so expect questions you never saw the first time.
